Using conventional SIMs, if a business customer wants to switch the network operator their devices are subscribed to, they must physically change the device’s SIM card. If a device is deployed to a remote location, the cost of a site visit may negate the cost saving in changing the operator. This can result in customers being locked in to a network operator that fails to deliver the best value for money.

For devices that are constantly moving between geographies, such as connected cars, conventional SIMs fail to deliver an uninterrupted service. If users want to benefit from local connectivity rates, the SIM card must be changed whenever the device moves between regions. Not only is this inconvenient, it also results in service interruption. While roaming or dual SIMs can mitigate this issue, these options are significantly more expense than the local connectivity rates offered by eSIMs.

For device manufacturers, conventional SIMs result in complex supply chains and convoluted SIM inventories. For example, a manufacturer that supplies devices to a variety of geographical locations, must develop a system to ensure that the right SIM is embedded in the right device, depending on the device’s ultimate destination. This means that discrete production and distribution lines must be established and maintained for every region to which the manufacturer supplies devices.
